Joel Brigham kept a public house in Marlboro for over 50 years, was Selectman in 1763 and 1772, had extensive land and business connections. Was a noted Whig and sustained considerable loss in Continental money. About 1783, after death of his wife, he moved with his sons to Madisn, NY. Parents: Jonathan "Ensign" BRIGHAM and Mary FAY .

Jonathan Brigham married his cousin, Mary Fay. He settled what was a part of the Thomas Brigham Estate in Marlboro, Mass. He was prominent in his community and held offices of responsibility. He was commonly called the "Indian Warrior". One day while chopping in the woods he saw a savage preparing to take aim at him; he seized his musket, stepped forward in full view, exclaiming as he did so, "Shoot straight, you dog". Both fired at the same moment, when the Indian dropped his gun, and with a tremendous whoop, bounded high into the air and fell dead. The indian's bullet passed close to the ear of Jonathan, who escaped unhurt. Parents: Thomas BRIGHAM and Mary RICE.

Lucy E Brigham, daughter of Nelson J and Mary Brigham, was born at East Delevan, WI, August 11, 1851. In 1871, on the 20th day of February, at her home in East Delevan, she was married to Cyrus West. Together they came west to the state of Iowa and made their home in Cedar County, later moving to Glidden, Iowa, from which place they came to Nebraska in March 1883. On March 25th, 1903 Mr. West passed on from this life to Life Eternal. Mrs. West stayed on the farm for a dozen years after that, then in October 1915 she moved into Shelby.
While living in the vicinity of Wesley Chapel (Note:rural church northwest of Shelby), Mrs. West, a member of the church, was very active in all enterprises of the church, and since moving to Shelby she has taken an active part in the life of the church here. She was president of the Women's Missionary Society from 1921 to 1926. She was also active in the work of the W.C.T.U.
To the home of Mr. and Mrs. West there came four children, three daughters and one son. One daughter, Mrs. I D McFadden, preceded her mother into the better world, having passed away at Hotchkiss, Colo. The other children, Mrs. C E Casselberry, of Shelby, Mrs. Ord Pierce, of Moscow, Kansas and Floyd C West, of Osceola, remain to mourn the loss of their mother. Also, there are eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who will miss their grandmother.
Mrs. West has known a large share of sorrow and pain, and for many month past has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. C E Casselberry, from whose home on Thursday night last, November 20, in the evening twilight, she took her departure for the heavenly shore. She had lived in this life seventy-nine years three months and nine days. She has gone to join her loved one and her Lord where she will live forever.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E E Pengelly in the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30. The body was laid to rest in Shelby Graceland Cemetary. Parents: Nelson Jabez BRIGHAM and Mary PIERCE.
